ORGANISERS of the city’s open-air theatre season have hailed their first young people’s project as a success.

Chester Performs, the arts organisation behind the critically acclaimed Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre, presented its new young person’s theatre company in the park last week.

As You Find It, comprising 15- to 19-year-olds from across Cheshire, gave its premiere performance last Friday.

Kelly Selvester, 18, who worked on the lighting and design, said: “It’s been such a wonderful experience, completely different from working in a normal theatre.

“As well as expanding my backstage skills, I have also had the chance to work with some exceptional people who have been such fun to work alongside.”

The group of aspiring young arts enthusiasts had been working together for just five days to devise a performance inspired by Shakespeare’s sonnets.

The company worked under the guidance of the theatre’s artistic director Alex Clifton, musical director and composer Tarek Merchant, movement director Claire Morris and stage manager Amy Chandler.

The 2011 Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre season continues until Sunday, August 21, with Shakespeare’s As You Like It and Glyn Maxwell’s Merlin and the Woods of Time. For tickets, call 0845 241 7868.
