Former manager of Chester City FC and Wales legend Ian Rush has been fined in court after he was charged with speeding in Hoole.

The former Liverpool FC striker was also slapped with six penalty points after failing to tell police who was driving his BMW earlier this year.

The 52-year-old, of King’s Drive, Caldy, Wirral,  formerly of Flint, did not attend the hearing at Warrington.

Magistrates heard his vehicle was caught by a speed camera travelling at 35mph in a 30mph stretch of the A56 in Hoole, Chester, on February 23.

Prosecutors said Rush was sent a notice of prosecution and a reminder and did not respond to either letter.

The charge of speeding was withdrawn and he was proved guilty in his absence of failing to identify the driver of the car on February 26.

Magistrates fined the ex-Welsh international £600 and ordered him to pay £85 court costs.

He was also hit with a standard victim surcharge of £60.

Rush was born in St Asaph and brought up in Flint.

He played for Liverpool FC from 1980-1987 and 1988-1996, and is the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, having scored a total of 346 goals in all competitions.

Rush played at Chester City, Juventus, Leeds United, Newcastle United, Sheffield United, Wrexham and Sydney Olympic. He made 73 appearances for Wales and he remains the record goalscorer for Wales with 28 goals.

Since retiring as a player in 2000, Rush had a stint as manager of Chester City, and has worked as a TV football pundit.
