Churches will unite to mark the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity at Chester Cathedral later this month.

On Sunday, January 24, Christians from across the churches of Cheshire will come together at Chester Cathedral for a service to mark the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Leaders from the major denominations will be taking part and the preacher at the service will be Rev Lord Leslie Griffiths.

Lord Griffiths, a former President of the Methodist Conference and currently the superintendent minister of Wesley’s Chapel in London, has sat in the House of Lords since 2004, where he has been outspoken on a variety of social issues. He has also been a contributor to the BBC Thought for the Day.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity has been held each year for more than 100 years, its theme being selected by one of the members of the World Council of Churches.

This year the theme for the united service has been chosen by the churches of Latvia and is Salt of the Earth. Rt Rev Keith Sinclair, the Bishop of Birkenhead said: “This is a particularly appropriate theme within Cheshire, whose wealth and industry has been based on the salt deposits found underneath the county.”

Members of the Salt of the Earth Network established by Bishop Sinclair to promote the relationships between church, industry and community will be taking part in the service.

The service will be at 4pm and all are welcome.
