CHESTER Market and the Forum Shopping Centre were evacuated on Saturday when a vehicle caught fire in the basement of the multi-storey car park.
A car was found ablaze on the red level, above the basement level at the municipal car park on Princess Street, Chester, at 4.14pm on Saturday.
Two fire engines from Ellesmere Port Fire Station, a fire engine and an aerial appliance from Chester station and the high-volume pump and supporting fire engine from Congleton all attended.
Fire crews, including four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus, used one hose reel water jet to extinguish the flames.
All levels of the car park were heavily smoke-logged, so firefighters spent more than three hours clearing the smoke with a large fan.
A full evacuation of Chester Market and the Forum Shopping Centre took place.
