A teenager who cycled from the Midlands to Ellesmere Port with her husband to be has celebrated her 100th birthday.

Betsy Wall marked her centenary at The Shell Club in Whitby with four generations by her side.

Betsy (born Beadshore) came from Bourntree in the Midlands.

She first arrived in Ellesmere Port aged 18  when she cycled with Bill her husband to be who was looking to find work at Bournell’s Ironworks.

Leaving her job at her mother’s bakery, Betsy married in 1934 and moved into a house in Highfield Road where she gave birth to two boys Bill and Raymond.

After moving to Fleet Street Betsy gave birth to daughter Ann and then spent her later life in Wolverham.

The family says throughout her life Betsy has dedicated herself to dressmaking, gardening and looking after her family.

As a surprise, a party was held to celebrate the happy occasion with family and friends travelling from across the country to join Betsy on her special birthday.

Four generations of children and grandchildren were there and the youngest was just two.

There was a three tier cake decorated like a garden with Betsy sitting on top.

In 2011, the birth of a great great grand daughter meant there were five generations of females alive in her family.

After bringing up her three children, the family said the party was the first opportunity for all her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great- great grandchildren to come together at the same time.
