A Chester law firm is celebrating its 190th birthday this year.

Allington Hughes Law, on Vicars Lane opposite Grosvenor Park, was founded in Wrexham in 1826 by Thomas Hughes when he established himself as a solicitor 190 years ago this month.

The firm later became known as Allington Hughes and Bate and in 1986 it merged with David Hughes and Co, a legal practice established in Chester in 1912. The combined practice became known as Allington Hughes.

The firm has continued to grow and in 2010 merged with David Spalding Solicitor. In 2011 the firm became a legal disciplinary practice by appointing Alison Stace, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives, as a partner. Alison is the first non-solicitor lawyer to become a partner of Allington Hughes.

On September 1, 2013, Allington Hughes Limited acquired Cyfraith JRL Law, based in Llanrwst. This took the firm to three offices in total and it now employs 75 staff across Cheshire and North Wales.

Managing director Alison Brebner said: “Having been with Allington Hughes for almost 20 years, I have experienced firsthand the many changes in both our firm and the legal profession.
