Runcorn band Fireflys named among six bands to watch by Roadrunner Records sign me to

THE LEAD singer of Runcorn rock outfit Fireflys says it feels like ‘years of hard work are paying off’ after they received top international recognition from industry leaders.

The three-piece act were named among ‘six top bands music fans need to hear now’ by US production company Roadrunner Records on its site Sign Me To – a ‘what’s hot and what’s not’ of the independent and underground scene.

The award came after the band made it to number one in the site’s UK and second in its international rock chart.

Frontman Lee Wylding said: “The fact that we got in at number two in the rock charts and we are currently number one in their UK charts is quite a feat considering it’s only word of mouth that has got us there.

“Our single Jenny, Play Your Guitar has had some amazing reviews, especially from the people who run the website; I thought we were onto something when I wrote that to be honest.”

Fireflys’ debut album Better to Burn Out stormed to the top 30 in the Amazon download chart last year, outselling the likes of Kings Of Leon, Oasis and The Smiths.

Their second album Cathedral For Your Ashes was due out in September but has been delayed while the band make some changes.

Lee said: “It’s been pushed back to late 2011 or early next year due to a bit of fine-tuning. It just wasn’t ready.”

Their next live gig is next Friday, November 18, at Elevator in Liverpool and admission is free.

The band said they will also be staging a launch event somewhere in the borough when they have a definite release date for their album.
