Ancient coin found in garden

A TIVERTON man couldn’t believe his luck when he found a Charles II halfpenny in his front garden.

Derek Marshall, of Huxley Lane, was removing a conifer plant when he heard the sound of metal on the ground.

Mr Marshall said: “I looked down and I saw a disc of metal I thought it was a washer or something, but when I cleaned it off I realised it was a coin.”

Mr Marshall took it to the Grosvenor Museum in Chester, and spoke to specialist Frances McIntosh.

He said: “She took a few photographs and confirmed it was a Charles II halfpenny and that it was post civil war, around 1680. It was also minted in Ireland.

“It is quite an interesting find, not really worth much, but I will definitely hang on to it.”
