Community arts providers from Cheshire West and Chester will find out tonight if they have won an award for their efforts.

The inaugural Community and Voluntary Arts Awards will be presented at Chester Town Hall this evening (May 19) by Lord Mayor of Chester Bob Rudd.

More than 25 voluntary arts organisations will be represented and performances will be given by DOPE, Cheshire Dance’s first all-male street and break dance crew, and the new Chester Youth Symphony Orchestra.

The event takes place during National Voluntary Arts week.

David Woods, chairman of Cheshire West Voluntary Arts Network, said “I am delighted that we have had so much interest in our arts awards. We want to celebrate the contribution that community and voluntary arts groups make to the cultural life of our community.

“We know that participation in the arts enriches the quality of life, improves a sense of wellbeing and promotes community cohesion.

“Across West Cheshire hundreds of groups facilitate this activity week in and week out. We want to celebrate that.”

The award categories are: Music, Children and Young people, Community Performing Arts, Community Visual Arts and special awards.
