The polls are in and the dogs have it.

After a tense week of voting online for our Pet of the Year, the winner and both runners up are all of the canine variety.

With a shortlist of 12 that included three cats, a pig and a rabbit with a beautiful bow, voting was always going to be neck and neck.

Even up until the deadline of 5.30pm on Monday, the results could have gone either way, but the final result put Anthony Farrall’s dog Gizmo from Chester in the front with 19% of the votes.

Anthony said: "Gizmo is my two-year-old border collie. Her hobbies are chasing balls, walkies, rolling over and SIT."

Gizmo wins a hamper of goodies worth £100 from competition sponsor HJ Lea Oakes.

Helen Tyrrell's dog Daisy Doo from Flintshire came second

In second place was Helen Tyrrell’s dog Daisy Doo from Flintshire with 16% of votes, followed very closely by Louise Thompson’s dog Jack, snug in someone else's basket, with 15%.

Louise said: "Jack found us as an abandoned puppy 13 years ago. He was cold and hungry so we took him in, reported him and kept our fingers crossed no one came forward as we loved him already.

"We haven't looked back. He has arthritis now but still behaves like a puppy playing with our young chihuahua and trying to take the ball when our six-year-old year old Noah has a kick about.

"We couldn't have asked for a better dog. He has a massive place in our hearts. "

Both dogs will receive runner-up prizes worth £50.
