An Ellesmere Port company is returning to St George’s Hall in Liverpool to stage another classic Shakespeare production.

Chalice Media will present its post-apocalyptic adaptation of one of Shakespeare’s greatest comedies Much Ado About Nothing at St George’s Hall from Wednesday, August 3 to Friday, August 5.

As the final production in a quartet of classic Shakespeare plays to be given a creative and contemporary twist by the Chalice team over the last four months, it promises to be one to remember.

The performances will take place in the stunning surroundings of The Concert Room at the iconic venue as part of the Where There’s a Will… Shakespeare Season launched to mark the 400th anniversary of the Bard’s life and work.

The series - a creative partnership endeavour between Chalice Media and St George’s Hall - launched in April 2016 with the creation of an original, site-specific, Shakespeare-themed walking tour that travelled audiences from the courtrooms of St George’s Hall, through the calls and down into the creepy catacombs beneath the historic listed building.

Opening on the anniversary of the Bard’s birth/death (April 23) Walking the Bard: The Shakespeare Experience was very well received, with writer and director Laura Harris gaining recognition and praise for her creativity and vision.

A highly successful performance run of Macbeth, set in a dystopian future, launched at the same time as Walking The Bard and was swiftly followed by a steam-punk adaptation of The Tempest.

Most recently the Chalice team produced a thoughtful and dynamic 1920s Prohibition-era adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, transforming the Concert Room into the Capulets’ raucous Speakeasy!

Considered by many to be one of Shakespeare’s best comedies, Much Ado About Nothing tells the story of young lovers Hero and Claudio who are to be married in one week. To pass the time, they conspire with Don Pedro to set a ‘lover’s trap’ for Benedick, an arrogant confirmed bachelor, and Beatrice, his favourite sparring partner.

Laura Harris said: “It’s a bit like Shakespeare meets The Walking Dead, but less gruesome!

“Having previously developed the production for a site-specific run of performances at the National Waterways Museum in Ellesmere Port during summer 2013, we are now delighted to offer audiences the opportunity to catch this exciting and engaging tour de force adaptation in the incredible surroundings of The Concert Hall at St George’s Hall.”
