CHESTER residents will be swapping cars for bikes during the week of June 19-27.

Bike Week is a celebration of all things cycling, with a series of events that will form part of Chestival 2010, sponsored by Bank of America.

Starting on Monday, June 21, Halfords Tour Series will be brought to the city by Cheshire West and Chester Council.

The event will feature some of the UK’s greatest road and track racing talent who will race around the city centre. This is a completely free event for all the family.

For the duration of Bike Week, the Chestival team will be providing an opportunity for local businesses to show the city what they are made of in the Cycle Corporate Challenge.

Teams of four will compete on the stage outside the Town Hall in heats for a chance to take part in the finals on Sunday, June 27.

The finale of the week will finish with Cycle Sunday, where families will be encouraged to cycle into Chester. Included in the activities will be the BMX displays in the amphitheatre.

Around the Town Hall there will be the UK’s number one mountain bike stunt/trials display team, boasting some of Europe’s finest riders, mixed with trials stars from the past decade.

Throughout the day, they will be showing crowds their tricks and thrills – and there will be an opportunity for budding stunt riders to have a go.

Bethan Vaughan, programme manager for Cycle Chester, said: “This year’s event aims to encourage everyone to consider using a bike, whether that be for pleasure and to enjoy all the many cycle paths in and around the city, or to get to and from work.

“We hope that all the exciting events that form part of Bike Week will encourage people to come to Chester for a free, fascinating and family-focused week of fun.”
