Chester Performs have announced a series of special one off events will take place in 2016 to complement the city’s MBNA Music Festival, staged every June.

Ensemble Deva, the chamber group resident at the acclaimed festival, will be performing the extra concerts in the run up to the 2016 festival.

The first takes place at 7.30pm on Thursday, January 21 at the Wesley Church Centre in St John Street.

These concerts mark a departure from previous years and signal an intent to firmly cement Ensemble Deva’s highly regarded standing on the national music circuit.

Chester Performs’ artistic director Alex Clifton said: “Here at Chester Performs, we’re immensely proud of the fact that in producing the Chester Music Festival for the last three years, we have created a chamber ensemble that is truly world class and it’s right here in Chester.

“We want to showcase the talents that exist in Ensemble Deva. These are outstanding musicians and they really enjoy playing together rand that’s something that jumps out at you when you come to see them.

“So we wanted, and they wanted, to present a programme not just annually in June but to keep the magic alive throughout the year.”

The January 21 concert features Ensemble Deva’s leader, violinist Giovanni Guzzo, and resident oboist Rachael Clegg.

Along with cellist Hannah Roberts and violist Chloé van Soeterstède, they will be playing a popular programme including Mozart’s Adagio for Cor Anglais and String Trio and Oboe Quartet in F Major, Schubert’s String Trio (D471), three string trios by Boccherini and Jean Françaix’s Cor Anglais Quartet.

Rachael Clegg said: “I’m so delighted to be back in Chester in January, playing such sublime music with such talented friends. I love this music and it’s going to be a special night; I can’t wait!
