Pop, rock, punk and pop-poetry acts will join forces for charity in Chester.

Organisers have announced this year’s OXJAM charity festival with 11 acts playing over October 22 and 23.

The two-venue festival, which takes place at Alexander’s in Rufus Court and at the Golden Eagle on Castle Street, was put together by Chester natives Phil Simmons, 41, and Simon Jones, 38.

Mr Simmons, a music production and sound engineering student at the School of Sound Recordings, said: “We are excited to be bringing together the cream of the North West’s musical talent for a weekend of music and fundraising.

“OXJAM will take over two popular Chester venues for two nights packed with live music.”

Chester band Chemistry Lane will headline at the Golden Eagle on October 22 and Liverpool-based alternative rock band Veyu headline at Alexander’s on October 23.

Pop-poet Vinny Peculiar, who has played alongside musicians from The Smiths and Oasis, will also be in evidence.

Mr Simmons, 41 said he was confident of the event being a success for both the charity and the city.

He said: “It’s the first time either of us have ever organised anything of this scale and across multiple venues.

“We just want people to come out and support Oxfam and some local talent.”

Mr Simmons previously considered volunteering at Oxfam, a charity which provides oversees aid.

He said: “It never happened. This time it just grew and grew until we had 11 bands on the bill. What better way to raise money for a great cause by doing something that you love? It’s incredibly rewarding and I’ve loved every minute of it.”

OXJAM is a nationwide month of local gigs hosted throughout October.

Hundreds of gigs have been organised nationwide to raise money for Oxfam and promote local bands.

Hayden Hughes, member of Chester punk rock band Chupa Cabra, praised the work of OXJAM.

He said: “OXJAM’s been going for years now, it’s a very reputable event and when we were offered to play at the gig, we jumped at the opportunity.

“We love to play gigs at the Eagle, and if we can raise a bit of money for charity, that’s a huge bonus.”
