Plans have been submitted for a KFC drive-through restaurant on the Greyhound Retail Park.

Standard Life UK Retail Park Trust Ltd has applied for planning permission for the 278 sq metres unit, fronting Sealand Road, on what is currently part of the car park serving Next and other stores as well as a disused garden centre.

A document accompanying the plan, on land owned by Standard Life, states: “The new building is designed as a KFC format with a flat roof and low parapets. The overall massing is similar to other class A3 use buildings in the general locality of the retail parks.”

It says the proposed new pod will improve the presence of the retail park from Sealand Road and provide “another drive-thru” restaurant – existing outlets are McDonald’s and Costa. The site is said to be in “a very accessible” location and will create “an attractive new KFC unit”. KFC already has an outlet on Foregate Street in Chester city centre.

“The proposal will create additional investment and job creation within the retail park and will provide additional choice in terms of food and drink for users of the retail park,” says the document.

As a result of the scheme, a total of six parking spaces would be lost. A supporting document says the scheme will not pose a threat to Chester city centre saying that despite the economic downturn and a vacancy level “slightly above the UK average”, the city centre “remains a healthy and vibrant” place.

A spokesperson for KFC said: “We'd love to open a restaurant in Chester to satisfy demand from our fans in the area.”
