A team of judges will officially decide where Chester’s best burger can be found during a special taste-off this weekend.

Kash Tap Rooms are holding their inaugural Burger Off competition at Hoole Community Centre this Saturday (October 3) as part of their Octoberfest celebrations - an English celebration of the annual German beer festival.

Mockingbird Taproom, The Oaklands in Hoole, Luke’s Eating House, Joseph Benjamin, Moules a-Go-Go, The Piper, The Lodge Bar and The Hollows are preparing to do their best to impress a panel of burger-loving judges who will officially declare the best burger in the city.

All will make the same standard burger using the same ingredients - a beef burger, a bun, lettuce, tomato and onion and all must work with the same components.

The panel, consisting of the Lord Mayor, WeAreChester, TasteCheshire, ChesterFoodPorn and Dee 106.3 DJ Gavin Matthews will try two burgers from each restaurant before making their final decision.

The winner, according to Andy Tabberer from Kash, will receive ‘a year’s worth of bragging rights’.

“This is where anything goes,” he told The Chronicle. “And we mean anything. We’re looking for someone to re-invent the burger. We want our tiny minds blown. We’re talking a Tim Burton like re-imagining of the humble meat sandwich. There are no rules for this one.

“The cooking will take place in a fully kitted out catering trailer, the spiritual home of the humble burger. Each chef will be given a time slot to cook, with two chefs cooking the same time.

“The winner can say they redefined the burger as we know it,” he added.

Beer festival

And as the Burger Off gets underway, so does the October-style beer festival where the focus is German beer. Ten or more cask and keg beers from German breweries, plus local ones, will be available, and there will also be refreshments like burgers, hot dogs and fries available along with live music supplied courtesy of 3Kings.

The Burger Off starts at 2.30pm while the beer festival kicks off at 2pm. Tickets are £1 and are available from the Kash Tap Rooms, Chester Beer and Wine and Hoole Community Centre. A limited number of tickets will be available on the day.
