NEWCASTLE United players swapped black and white strips for sharp suits when they joined fans for a special charity screening of the latest James Bond thriller.

With manager Alan Pardew leading his team down the red carpet the local heroes signed autographs for fans who had gathered outside the Tyneside Cinema ahead of the event , which aimed to raise £5,000 for the Newcastle United Foundation.

And inside 260 guests enjoyed the chance to watch the recently released Skyfall alongside the United stars, fresh from celebrating their win over West Bromwich Albion at the weekend.

The United boss, who brought his family along to the showing, said: “I’m very much looking forward to seeing the film as I’ve been a big James Bond fan over the years.

“Sean Connery has to be my favourite and I think Goldfinger is the best film, but Daniel Craig is very good too.

“I’ve brought the family and is nice for us to be able to come out to the cinema together for the night.

“This is also a great event for the foundation and that is why we here to support their work with the community and at grassroots level.”

But Newcastle defender Steven Taylor disagreed with his manager on the controversial question of who is the greatest Bond of all time.

“Daniel Craig is the best Bond,” he said. “Casino Royale was my favourite film so I hope this tops it. We’re all big fans so we jumped at the chance to come tonight and support the foundation.”

Organised by the Newcastle United Foundation and sponsored by Technip, a project management, engineering and construction company for the energy industry, the event aims to raise funds for disadvantaged children across the North East.

There was also a raffle and an auction on the evening and all money raised goes towards the club’s official charity, which works with 38,000 youngsters and families every year to encourage learning and healthy eating by using their passion for football.

Fundraising manager Sarah Medcalf said: “Our aim this season is to reach even more disadvantaged children and young people in the North East and everyone who attended this event is helping us to achieve that.”
