MERSEYSIDE figures including Sir Paul McCartney were named among the richest people in the UK.

The former Beatle and wife Nancy Shevell are worth around £680m, according to this year’s Sunday Times Rich List.

Their combined fortune placed them 133rd in the 25th edition of the list, released yesterday.

Despite what the survey said was a modest year for Beatles holding company Apple Corps, Sir Paul’s income from touring and his wife’s wealth from her father’s trucking company meant their overall worth was up by 2%.

Ex-bandmate Ringo Starr was ranked 485th, with an estimated fortune of £160m based on royalties, Apple Corps dividends and the proceeds from a tour of North America.

While not ranked in the main list, Coleen Rooney secured a spot on the roll call of Britain’s richest young people.

The survey pointed to her media career and deals with the likes of Littlewoods, Asda and Nike as the source of much of her estimated £14m wealth.

Wirral-raised James Bond star Daniel Craig, 45, and his wife Rachel Weisz were a new entry in the richest entertainers list. After Skyfall smashed UK box-office records and Craig was one of the stars of the London Olympics, the couple have a wealth of £40m.

Elsewhere in the list, Littlewoods heir and Everton FC shareholder Lord Grantchester was at number 64, while Liverpool-based scrap metal entrepreneur Robin Sheppard and family were placed 80th. Lord Grantchester’s grandfather, Sir John Moores, had been placed fifth in the first-ever rich list, published in 1989.

Matalan founder John Hargreaves, a Liverpool docker’s son who started out selling seconds at city markets at the age of 14, was placed 84th in the list. Mr Hargreaves and family are estimated to have a fortune of £1bn.

The Duke of Westminster, whose property empire was behind Liverpool One, was ranked eighth overall, with his wealth estimated to have risen by £450m.

The rich list is based on individuals’ cash wealth, income and assets. Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, who has a stake in Arsenal FC, was at the top of the pile, after his fortune soared by £985m.
