Great news for fans of '80s blockbuster Top Gun - Tom Cruise has confirmed that there is going to be a sequel.

Tom revealed the news of Top Gun 2 in an interview on Australian TV show Sunrise, whilst promoting his upcoming film The Mummy.

He said: “It is definitely happening. It’s true. It’s true.

“I’m going to start filming it probably in the next year. I know. It’s happening. It is definitely happening ... you’re the first people that I’ve said this to.”

The first film was released in 1986 and followed the story of Maverick (Tom Cruise), a fighter pilot at the Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School.

Maverick is reckless and has a cocky attitude which puts him at odds with his co-pilots, especially Iceman (Val Kilmer).

Tom's character is set on becoming a top fighter pilot but he’s also fighting for the attention of his flight instructor, Charlotte Blackwood (Kelly McGillis).

Rumours of a sequel first started circulating when Top Gun producer Jerry Bruckheimer tweeted a picture of him and Tom Cruise in January, last year.

The caption said: "Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2."

Since Tom's announcement everyone has been speculating if his co-pilot Iceman will be back too. Well wonder no more as Val Kilmer tweeted yesterday "I'm ready Tom- still got my top gun plaque! Still got the moves!"

Top Gun was directed by Tony Scott who has also worked on Beverly Hills Cop II, Enemy of the State and The Fan .

In 2009 Tony was one of the executive producers on legal TV drama The Good Wife - starring Emmy award-winning actress Julianna Margulies.

The director sadly died in August 2012 when he committed suicide by jumping off the Vincent Thomas Bridge in the San Pedro port district of LA.
