Movie giants Dreamworks will transform an iconic Liverpool landmark into a magical wonderland this Christmas.

In a first for any UK city, St George's Hall will play host to popular characters from the Hollywood studio’s catalogue of animated blockbusters to create a spectacular lantern experience suitable for the whole family.

DreamWorks Lights, as the event will be known, will include movie favourites Shrek, Kung-Fu Panda and the Penguins of Madagascar.

As well as the opportunity to see the stars of family film classics in their home town, visitors can also get close to Shrek and his pals in a special green-screen photo experience.

The Grade I listed building was hand-picked by studio bosses who recognised Liverpool’s skill in hosting large-scale experiences for thousands of people.

Full details of what DreamWorks Lights will entail will be released later this month - but excitement is already building in town hall circles for what is set to be one of the country’s top attractions this Christmas.

Liverpool’s assistant mayor and cabinet member for culture Cllr Wendy Simon said: “We’re thrilled DreamWorks has chosen Liverpool as the only place you’ll be able to see this amazing attraction in Europe this Christmas.

“St George’s Hall is the perfect place to get everyone in the Christmas spirit and will be the perfect home for these iconic characters at this special time of year.”

Richard Hollis, who works for the UK branch of DreamWorks, said: “It’s very exciting to be able to bring our wonderful lantern experience to the UK for the very first time.

“We chose Liverpool because it is an iconic city, a true cultural capital known all over the world for its great events and the stunning location for St George’s Hall is the perfect setting for DreamWorks Lights."
