Two free events at Chester’s Grosvenor Museum will reveal the secrets of a Samurai’s armour and demonstrate how these Japanese warriors fought in battle.

How the Samurai Prepared for Battle shows how a high-ranking Japanese warrior would have dressed for battle in the 16th century. The demonstration will involve a model being dressed piece by piece in a full suit of original Samurai armour and includes a detailed narrative on the cultural and historic background of each piece.

This will be followed by a martial arts demonstration of Samurai fighting techniques by Yanagi Ryu Jujutsu, which will include the use of wooden and bladed weapons and will be accompanied by a full explanation throughout.

Cllr Louise Gittins, Cabinet member for culture, leisure and wellbeing, said: “The Samurai were warriors from medieval and early-modern Japan, who were some of the most formidable and disciplined fighters in the world.

“This is a rare chance to have a behind-the-scenes glimpse of a way of life which doesn’t exist anymore. The martial arts demonstration, given by highly trained fighters wearing replica Samurai armour, promises to capture the energy and intimidating control of these fearsome warriors.”
