A Chester hotel is the best in the world according to TripAdvisor.

Edgar House, overlooking the River Dee, has topped the world’s small hotel category in the travel website's Travellers' Choice awards, which honours the best rated hotels with less than 30 rooms.

Now in their 14th year, the Travellers’ Choice awards honour the world’s most outstanding properties in the categories of top hotels, bargain, B&Bs and inns, luxury, best service and small hotels.

The award winners were determined based on the millions of reviews and opinions collected in a single year from TripAdvisor travellers worldwide.

Co-owner of Edgar House Mike Stephen said: “We are over the moon to be recognised by TripAdvisor as a 2016 Travellers’ Choice Awards winner. To be named the number one Small Hotel in the world is an incredible honour, and we can’t find the words to say how thrilled and humbled we are. We’d like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all of our team, and of course, a huge thank you to the wonderful hotel and restaurant guests for supporting us, and for helping us win this amazing award.”

TripAdvisor spokesperson James Kay said: “These awards are based on guest feedback gathered throughout the year, so what sets the winners apart is not just a high standard of service and accommodation, but the fact that they deliver this day in and day out.”

This is not the first accolade for Edgar House. Earlier this month (January) it was named one of MSN.com’s top 10 best places in the UK for a winter break.

The hotel was also named in Trvago’s top 20 last September and in the Good Hotel Guide in June last year.
