A musical theatre group for young people in the town is over the moon after a member was nominated for an award in the amateur theatre’s equivalent of the Oscars.

Ciera Evans has been nominated for her performance as the Cat in Footloose Musicals’ production of HONK , a musical adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ugly Duckling.

The group, open to Chester and Wirral young people from eight to 18, points out the NODA Awards are given to amateur performers nationally.

The presentation this year will take place at the Mercure Hotel in Manchester in May and everyone is keeping their fingers crossed for Ciera, a member of the youth theatre for six years.

Ciera said: “Playing the Cat was a challenge as the part was originally written for a male which made the songs particularly difficult for me.

“Eventually with the help of Liz, Craig and Sue at Footloose the role became less daunting and I’m thrilled to be nominated!”

She continued: “Footloose has been like a second family to me over the years and has helped me develop and improve my performances as well as heightening my confidence. Being in Footloose helped me to decide to study performing arts in the City of Liverpool College.

“I’m so grateful for all the help, support and wonderful memories Footloose has given me.”

The group is currently rehearsing for its next production, An Evening with Footloose Musicals , a programme of song, dance and comedy which will give the young performers a chance to showcase what they’ve been doing over the last year.

Performances are on Friday and Saturday, February 21 and 22 at Rivacre Primary School where the group rehearses and tickets are available by ringing 0151 355 1453 or 07772 867741.

Director Liz Legerton added: “These young people work very hard towards a production and it means a lot if they can perform to a full house.”
