The Globe’s award-winning small-scale touring programme is heading to Clwyd Theatr Cymru in Mold for the first time with Shakespeare’s classic romantic tragedy Romeo and Juliet.

This new production can be seen at the North Wales venue from March 25-28.

It will be the last touring show at Shakespeare’s Globe which will be directed by artistic director Dominic Dromgoole, supported by the young director Tim Hoare.

Romeo and Juliet will be a fresh and new exploration of Shakespeare’s greatest love story. The play will open at Clwyd Theatr Cymru and then continue to tour around the UK and Europe before making its journey to the US.

A violent street brawl between their rival families is the prelude to Romeo’s first encounter with Juliet.

Despite this, and the fact Juliet has been promised to another, they fall in love. But any plans for their future happiness are cruelly destroyed by renewed violence between their families and tragedy begins to unfold.

A small troupe of travelling players takes to the road with Shakespeare’s classic tale of star-crossed lovers. Performed at the Globe and on an Elizabethan-style stage, this stripped-down version breathes new life into one of the greatest of all love stories.

Dominic Dromgoole is completing his artistic directorship in April 2016 after 10 successful years of running Shakespeare’s Globe. In his time he has directed more than 15 productions and it was under his leadership that the Globe’s original touring model was revisited.

Steffan Donnelly who plays Mercutio was raised in Llanfairpg and was in Terry Hands’ 2013 production of Terence Rattigan’s The Winslow Boy at Clwyd Theatre Cymru and has also performed at Mold with Y Twr/The Tower which played to sell-out audiences throughout Wales.

Using an Elizabethan style booth stage – inspired by paintings and etchings from Shakespeare’s time, when touring was prevalent – eight actors will visit beautiful and inspiring settings across the UK, Europe and the US with this scaled-down production.

The actors will be doubling up roles in this fast-paced adaptation and will be breaking the boundaries between the stage and the audience.
