The King’s School in Chester is once again opening up its impressive Vanbrugh Theatre to the wider public for a programme of professional and student work.

The independent school in Wrexham Road is offering an exciting opportunity to see performances by some of the UK’s leading professional theatre companies, alongside its normal programme of student work.

The Vanbrugh Season, introduced in 2013, has already hosted companies including Theatre in the Quarter, Cheshire Rural Touring Arts, Little Earthquake Theatre Company, Black Box Theatre Company and Theatrical Niche Ltd.

The programme allows students and members of the local community to see high quality professional productions at a subsidised rate of £5 per ticket.

Working with visiting actors

GCSE and A level drama students at The King’s School also have the opportunity to work with the visiting actors and directors prior to the performance within a practical workshop context.

This term, The King’s School is hosting two professional productions, the first of which was Lightspeed by award winning theatre company Organised Chaos which visited last week.

Following on from this, Liverpool based theatre company Tmesis will bring their production of That’s Amore to The Vanbrugh Theatre next month, a hilarious, fast-paced, passionate and poignant piece of physical theatre which delves into the vast world and culture of romantic love: from chance encounters to hidden desires, emotional extremes to the science of romance. It discovers the flesh and philosophy behind what makes our hearts beat faster.

Student shows

In addition to these shows, The Vanbrugh Theatre will also be hosting an eclectic mix of student shows, two of which are produced by The King’s School’s sixth form company Focus Theatre, who staged a production of Simon Stephen’s Punk Rock at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

A level drama students Edward Ramsey and Harriet Fisher will be directing productions of Tom Stoppard’s The Real Inspector Hound and Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of The Dog in the Night-time.
