Tiger Woods has already paid a visit to the Royal Liverpool Golf Club ahead of The Open Championship and locals are busy speculating over which celebs will be in Hoylake for the tournament.

The rumour mill has gone into overdrive on social media, with people claiming to have spotted A-list golf fans including George Clooney and Robbie Williams.

How genuine these sightings are remains to be seen, but it’s worth considering which stars might be making their way to the Wirral this week:

George Clooney

Whether gorgeous George makes it to The Open or not, it’s likely he will be the most ‘spotted’ celeb in Hoylake. When the tournament was last at Royal Liverpool in 2006 he was rumoured to have been seen enjoying a pint at the Ship Inn, on Market Street. Two years later, when the tournament was back in Merseyside at Royal Birkdale, Clooney was said to have rented a house in the area and spent an evening dining with Wayne Rooney. Expect lots of bizarre stories of his whereabouts this week.

Justin Timberlake

Grammy award winning singer Justin Timberlake is a huge golf fan. In June he was made creative director at American company Callaway Golf, and he even owns his own public course; the Mirimichi Golf Course in Memphis, Tennessee where he grew up. The only glitch is, he’s currently on tour in the States, but interestingly he does have Sunday off (and a private jet, probably) so maybe he’ll nip over for the final day?

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones

After separating last year, the Hollywood couple are now back together and should definitely be filed under “celebrities most likely to be spotted at The Open”. Catherine’s got form - she was said to have been in Hoylake for the 2006 Open, where she reportedly buddied up with Bruce Willis and George Clooney. Having recently rekindled their romance, perhaps the power couple are planning a second honeymoon in Hoylake.

Samuel L. Jackson

Rumours have already begun to emerge that actor and golf fan Samual L. Jackson is in town. Of course Twitter might be wrong and the Django Unchained star might not really have been watching the World Cup final in Hoylake on Sunday night, but we like to think he was. Earlier this month Jackson sat next to Victoria Beckham at the Wimbledon final, so maybe he’s in the UK for a sporting ‘vacation’.

Harry Styles

The One Direction star loves a round of golf and he’s pals with pro-golfer Justin Rose, who became the one to watch this week, after winning the Scottish Open on Sunday. Styles has just finished 1D’s European tour, so chances are he wants to take a bit of time out, and Hoylake isn’t a million miles away from where he grew up in Holmes Chapel.
