We hate to be the bearer of bad news but summer is officially over (if you're using the meteorological dates) and now it feels like Christmas will be here before we know it.

But as we hurtle towards the end of 2017, there are plenty of events in Chester we can get excited for.

We've compiled a handy list of just some of them so you can mark them in your diaries and see out the rest of the year well.

September 16

This charity spectacle is a quacking sight to behold.

Hundreds of people routinely line the banks of the Dee to watch colourful ducklings bob their way from the Queen's Park suspension bridge to the finish line near the bandstand.

Last year's event raised thousands more pounds for the Babygrow Appeal at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

The Chester Literature Festival held at Chester Town Hall

Bookworms will be delighted to learn that the city's annual literature festival will return in November.

But this time it will be held in its new home Storyhouse, the £37m cultural centre which opened in May.

Hollie McNish, winner of this year’s Ted Hughes Prize for Poetry, has been announced as guest artistic director for this year's festival.

In this inaugural role, Hollie will curate a weekend of events and installations throughout the building, filling Storyhouse with poetry from November 17-19.

The full line-up is expected to be announced soon and will include workshops, discussions, poetry, performance and author talks.

The world’s best rally drivers are coming back to Chester.

Expect another carnival atmosphere when the engine roar of Wales Rally GB returns. A crowd of 10,000 packed the city’s streets to catch a glimpse of the action last year, when organisers described it as one of the rally’s ‘biggest successes’.

The action will begin in earnest on Friday with drivers competing in six stages in North Wales before the closing checkpoint in Chester.

It will be entirely free to the public with some great vantage points available on the Rows.

Cheshire Beer Festival

November 10-11

One for beer-lovers, a whole festival dedicated to celebrating the stuff will be held at Chester Racecourse.

The line-up features more than 100 real ales, more than 20 ciders and perries, live music and plenty of food to wash the beer down.

November 19

Always a firm family favourite, the switch-on of the Christmas lights on Faulkner Street, Charles Street and at Hoole's community centre helps kick-start the festive season in Chester.

The annual event is organised by proud community champions Notting Hoole and attracts hundreds who turn out to see the suburb sparkling.

And new for this year is a Christmas market earlier in the day.

Chester Zoo Lantern Magic

November 24 - December 30

Lantern Magic at Chester Zoo

Go on a nighttime stroll through the 'enchanted forest' in celebration of the zoo's woodland and garden creatures.

Visitors will get to meet their favourite animals illuminated in lantern form and catch a magical glimpse of Santa on his sleigh.

Chester Christmas Market at Town Hall Square

You can glug gluhwein and pick up some presents while you're at it when the Christmas Market makes a welcome return to the heart of the city.

Pretty wooden stalls offering handcrafted items and tasty treats will take over Town Hall Square from mid November.

Santa Dash

December 3

The sight of hundreds of beard-sporting runners in their fabulous Father Christmas get-up pounding the pavements always raises a smile.

And it's all in aid of the Hospice of the Good Shepherd and The Countess Charity... Even better!

Winter Watch Parades

December 7 and 14

Devils, angels, dragons and even the Tree of Life will descend on the city centre to follow the Lord of Misrule on two separate dates in December.

The Winter Watch Parade harks back to medieval times when city leaders marched through the city to ensure it was secure before handing over the keys of Chester to the City Watch, the early police force.
