Widnes 2nd 25, Ruskin Park 2nd 5: FIRST-TEAM coach Andy Ruane took advantage of a free Saturday to look at some of the players who are helping to challenge for senior places and bring strength in depth to Heath Road.
He must have been pleased with the skill and commitment shown as the Wids second string made it six wins out of seven with this strong performance against their local rivals.
It took only four minutes for the Wids to get on the scoresheet, as winger Martin O'Neill crossed in the corner.
Strong defence by Ruskin halted the Wids but Park were beaten out wide again when Danny Furan followed up a neat kick through. Ruskin gained possession from the restart to race in from 40 yards - making it 10-5.
Although the only points came from Widnes in the second half, Ruskin creditably continued to run the ball, despite having the wind behind them.
Strong defence, especially from Clarke, Field, Atkin and Edwards, kept the St Helens men scoreless. The Wids' points came from an excellent effort from captain Chris Leedam, Cookson and McKeever scoring the others.
McKeever pipped Cookson for MoM.

A WINDSWEPT encounter was always going to be something of a lottery but victory puts Widnes in good spirits for this week's Lancs Cup semi-final.
Despite Wilkinson seeing a try disallowed, Widnes always looked to have an edge.
Excellence at half-back from High-field and Spencer and a strong centre partnership in Glover and Wilkinson provided the way forward.
Winger Dennett crossed wide out, Wilkinson and Glover followed and Widnes forwards gained an upper hand through Wild, McCann and the excellent Chambers.
Brick impressed in set-piece and open play with Duffy in support, while young prop Chabasi was also outstanding.
As the second half started, Webb and Duffy went close. Stafford showed good form while only hesitancy stopped Goulding from scoring.
Murnane and Elwell were the pick of the second-half forwards and substitute Swaine worked a runaround move with Spencer and released the backs for a final score.
