ELLESMERE Port captain Steve Foster has promised that his team will give everything in their vital visit to Crewe & Nantwich on Saturday as his side attempt to beat the drop.

After four seasons in the Powergen Northern Division's South Lancs/Cheshire Two section - the highest level the club has ever played at - Port know that if they fail to win at the weekend, they are likely to be relegated.

Although Port go into their final game a point above the relegation places, second-bottom Ormskirk host the division's basement side Moore and are expected to have few problems overcoming the league's whipping boys, who have a points difference of minus 596 for the season.

Port's opponents will be third-placed Crewe & Nantwich, who defeated them 27-13 in the Cheshire Plate final at Stockport less than three weeks ago.

Foster said: 'It's in our own hands and we all believe that we can do it. We seem to perform better when our backs are against the wall and that's what we're hoping to get on this occasion. We've looked at a video of the Plate final so we know what we have to do to beat Crewe & Nantwich and have worked out a game plan.

'Apart from the runaway leaders, Hoylake, any team in this division is capable of beating another on their day and we won't be intimidated by our hosts.

'I certainly wouldn't say that we've under-achieved this season as we've reached a cup final and the semi-final of a midweek competition, but I believe we're better than our league position suggests.'

Like Vauxhall FC in football, Ellesmere Port's climb up the leagues was quite spectacular in the late 1990s.

Formerly known as Shell, the club changed its name to attract players, supporters and sponsors from throughout the borough.

The club soon found its feet at the higher level, finishing a best-ever third in 2002 under skipper Dan Norcross, who has since departed.

Port were expected to steer clear of danger this term but a 17-16 home defeat to Duk-infield in their last home match of the season has set-up this must-win scenario.
