WIDNES Vets slipped to their first defeat of the season with a 36-26 loss at Wrexham.
The visitors hit the ground running and had three terrific tries on the board inside the first twenty minutes - one by Dave Cafferty, and two from Geoff Owen.
With three conversions from Ivan Winstanley, there looked no way back for the Wrexham side.
However, the second half was a different story.
With the elements in their favour, Wrexham were able use their big pack to good effect, and, aided by a heavy penalty count, fought back to score three close-range push-over tries. Brian Gill gave the visitor's overworked defence some respite with his eighth try of the season. But it was not to be as Wrexham added two late score to clinch the game in the final minutes.
