WINNINGTON Park Rugby Club make a second attempt to stage their annual meeting tomorrow - but they still have no one to replace Mick McCafferty, who is quitting as chairman.

The original meeting on May 24 was abandoned because no one had been nominated for the job and they still haven't been. It is a post that is crucial under Winnington's own constitution and a requirement also of the Cheshire and England RUs.

His departure is amid growing worries within the club of a 'takeover' by the junior section parents from those steeped in the senior game.

McCafferty wanted to resign last year, but agreed to carry on another 12 months when no one came forward.

But, having just taken over the Stanley Arms pub, he is adamant he is stepping down tomorrow, though he is not leaving the club.

He said: 'It is not a crisis yet, but we do have a problem common to most sports clubs in that people want to turn up, use the facilities and go away again.

'The chairman's job is a big responsibility. I showed my concern last year, that we had to have more involved to take the club forward.

'The membership simply does not realise what the democratically elected volunteers do for a club.

'You have to put up with a lot of rubbish as chairman, even your own members threatening you with legal action over certain issues or parents saying they will take their children across to Northwich.

'If we do get a nomination from the junior section, would they be interested in a particular age group rather than all the membership?

'The system does not produce any longer the stalwarts who do years and years of service.

'I am concerned what might happen if we got the wrong person in the job. There aren't many around with the experience necessary.'

Vice-chairman John Downham has not indicated he is willing to step up and is anyway Cheshire disciplinary secretary and occupied by Winnington's centenary celebrations which begin in September.

President Chris Gleave has moved abroad and McCafferty is due to take on his role and concentrate on fundraising.

Park also need a new first-team skipper. Ben Barton broke his arm for the third time during the last campaign and may retire.
