Lymm 10 Chester 20

CHESTER go into the final game of the season with a chance of booking a play-off place – albeit a slender one.

Saturday’s comeback victory at Lymm, coupled with a 25-24 defeat for second-placed Rossendale at home to Beverley, means it is still mathematically possible for Chester to take second place.

However, they must beat leaders Darlington Mowden Park at Hare Lane this Saturday while hoping Rossendale slip up at mid-table Waterloo.

The team finishing second in National League Three North goes into a promotion play-off with their counterparts from the Midlands section.

At Lymm on Saturday, Chester found themselves 10-3 down at the break. All they had to show for their first-half efforts was a penalty by Lloyd Hayes.

The visitors turned in a more assured display after the restart, absorbing Lymm’s attacks like a sponge while also growing in confidence themselves.

In the final quarter, winger Pete Rees scored in the corner for Chester after showing some neat footwork.

Hayes was unable to land the difficult conversion attempt but it was not to prove costly as Andy Moore ghosted his way over for a try. Hayes added the extras, making it 15-10 to Chester.

Two minutes from time, centre Noam Devey bagged a fine try which capped off an excellent game for the Welshman.

Chester 2nds finish the season with a trip to Preston Grasshoppers 2nds this Saturday.

In South Lancs/Cheshire Three, basement side Helsby fell to a 27-0 defeat at University of Liverpool in their final match of the campaign. Full-back Luke Ryder was man of the match for Helsby.
