Helsby 22 Liverpool University 19
HELSBY survived a fightback from their spirited student opponents to return to winning ways in South Lancs/Cheshire Division Three on Saturday.
On what was a fine afternoon for rugby, the home side started with all guns blazing.
Flanker Ken Holley powered through the defensive line to touch down only for his effort to be ruled out by the referee.
But moments later Helsby’s backs linked up well and stand-off Matty Lee bulldozed his way through to land the first try of the game.
The Chester Road outfit continued to command the contest and outside-centre Luke Ryder scored either side of half-time to take his try tally for the term up to six before No 8 Lyndon English sneaked over between a defensive line following a break.
Helsby gave away multiple penalties after restart and their indiscipline coincided with what was a much improved second-half performance from the visitors.
Fast play across their backs meant Liverpool reduced the deficit to three points.
But Helsby held on.
Christleton kept their title charge on track with a 20-12 victory at Acton Nomads on Saturday.
Chester 2nds suffered a 24-0 home loss to Burnage 2nds.
