Helsby 28 Linley 29

HELSBY blew the chance to register a rare win.

They led 28-10 at half time in Saturday’s South Lancs/Cheshire Three clash, but a failure to stick to playing common sense rugby allowed Linley to recover.

The visitors opened the scoring in the corner after a quick tap penalty. But Helsby’s John Cook led a recovery, running half the length of the field for his first try, Kev Ryder converting for a 7-5 lead. Cook then went over again, Ryder converting, before claiming his hat trick.

Winger Martin McQuire scored Helsby’s fourth try of the half, but a missed tackle by the same player saw Linley hit back with a try.

Helsby took their foot off the gas in the second half and Linley forced their way back into the game with three tries.

The final conversion edged them into a one-point lead.

Helsby have no league match this weekend.

Christleton lost 36-24 at Waterloo 4ths in the University of Salford League on Saturday. They host Moore 2nds on Easter Monday.
