WIDNES went clear at the top of South Lancs-Cheshire One thanks to Wilmslow beating Bowdon in the South Manchester derby and the Wids taking the points at Heath Road against a spirited Anselmians team.
The Wids have now won seven league games on the trot.
They started the game on top both in terms of possession and territorial advantage.
But against the run of play, after 12 minutes, one of the Anselmians wingers beat the home cover to follow up a tidy kick through by his stand-off for a try.
Trailing 5-0, Wids came back strongly, taking the ball to their opponents on every occasion.
Widnes, pressing hard on their opponents' line, were rewarded when number eight Paul Borg forced his way over.
The hosts were still on top in every department, especially the set pieces, where the line-out jumping of Field and Barraclough was complemented by precision throwing from hooker Lee Mc-Dermott .
On 35 minutes, the ever-busy Mickey Lamb burrowed his way over for a well-deserved try.
This came after Wids had put terrific pressure on Anselmians in a passage of play which saw every home player, from 1 to 15, involved.
Stu Hussey slotted home the conversion to make the half-time score 12-5.
The second half was much the same, with Wids taking the ball in hard, only to be halted by excellent defence from the Wirral side.
Vickerstaff, Godwin and Alderson all had strong games, supported well by Lamb and Hussey.
Eventually, Wids got more points on the board from a Hussey penalty for a 10-point cushion.
From a 65th-minute line-out, the ball was taken on by McDermott for winger Paul O'Connor.
His elusive run picked out Gareth Riley, who cut inside and jinked over.
Full-back Dave Welsh and winger Tommy Ledson both came close to scoring, both being halted yards from the line.
A late rally from Old Anselmians saw them gain a converted try.
The Wids will be happy with their progress, but there is still more to come from this young team, who are well capable of carrying things on through the rest of the season.
With no game this Saturday, the Wids will prepare for their return derby game at Birchfield on December 20 at 2.15pm.
