WINNINGTON Park have strengthened the team that just missed out on promotion last season by welcoming back three 'old boys'.
Park were beaten in the play-offs for North One and have lost leading points scorer Gary Bell and Richard Smith to neighbours Northwich this summer.
But they have announced three newcomers so far and say they are in talks with further likely recruits.
Powerful flanker Ben Richardson, 29, was capped for the North of England while at Burrows Hill originally and rejoins after relocating back to the area.
Utility back Rob Burchell, 21, whose dad Andy is a former hooker at Park, has also returned after a season with Bradford and Bingley.
The third newcomer is centre 23-year-old Neil Welch who partnered ex-RL and British Lions hero John Bentley at Cleckheaton last term and is another moving back to Mid Cheshire.
Winnington are heading into the centenary season and want to mark the occasion by promotion. They are laying great store in their amateur status and the development of juniors, under the guidance of former Sale scrum half Mark Warr, who has committed himself to at least one more season.
Vice captain Mark Patterson said: 'Of course it is disappointing to lose players, but we shall have at least as good a side, if not better than last season.
'It also bodes well that so many of last season's Cheshire Colts Plate winners are training with the senior sides.'
Park Vagabonds (the 3rd XV) did gain promotion and retain their ambitions though there is a greater emphasis on enjoyment.
Captain Dave Caine said: 'We have a great mix of age and youth, including many who have only recently taken up rugby. Our team is a platform for local lads of any ability to try out the sport.'
* Anyone wishing to train with Winnington Park is welcome at Burrows Hill on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm. Further details are available from Mark Patterson on 07747 756124 or Dave Caine on 07977 298017.
