Fleetwood 50, Widnes 5: THE agony goes on for the Wids - still anchored to the foot of the Powergen North Two West.

They were distinctly second best in the end on the Fylde coast.

The elusive first win seems as distant as ever for the Wids after this painful sixth consecutive league setback.

Widnes matched Fleetwood in all departments in the first 15 minutes.

But the hosts edged ahead in the 17th minute after creating a huge overlap on the left wing and they never looked back.

They promptly ran in another try after a clearing kick from Stuart Hussey was charged down to create the opportunity.

Two further scores on 27 and 33 minutes made the score 24-0 at the break and there was no way back for the visitors.

But the first 10 minutes of the second half saw Widnes' best spell.

Andy O'Neill showed grit and determination to go over at the corner for a classic winger's try.

But, inevitably, it was all just too little too late.

Fleetwood simply accelerated away again through their excellent forwards.

A wealth of quality possession from the lineouts and in the loose saw them boss what remained of proceedings.

Although it was another bad day for the visitors, there were some positive aspects.

Andy Shaw made a promising first start at scrum-half. Terry O'Hanlon was again impressive while Gary Moss continued his rehabilitation after injury with another strong performance. nWidnes will be hoping for better things this Saturday when Lymm come to Heath Road.

Widnes 2nd 29 Wigan 5: Appearances from veterans Gill, Riley and Clive Winstanley helped Wids to overcome the absence of several regulars to field a strong side.

Wigan looked the likelier scorers in the first quarter but Gill, Ruane and McKeever kept them at bay.

Morgan changed the direction by intercepting from a Wigan attack and running 50 metres to score.

Ruane converted and although Wigan responded by touching down from a rolling maul, Widnes were unlucky not to go over twice more before the break.

With the wind and slope in their favour upon the restart, the Heath Roaders stepped up a gear.

Newcomer Andy Aston, Murnane and skipper Preston excelled in the pack while halfbacks Riley and Ruane began to create scoring chances.

With full-back McKeever on top of his game in defence and attack, Wigan were confined to their own 22.

Gaps began to appear and open in the visitors' tiring and under-pressure defence and three close-range tries resulted.

Riley dummied over, Ruane blasted to the line and 'Tissot' Winstanley scored a dubious effort.

Paddy Cook evaded several would-be tacklers to complete the scoring, Mark Brick improving.

Next up for the seconds is a trip to Rossendale this Saturday (meet 12.30pm).
