Widnes were unlucky not to come away with at least a share of the spoils in this thrilling Miller Homes League fixture.

Stripped of at least a dozen players and arriving late, they turned in a performance of guts and determination before losing out in the last 10 minutes.

Not surprisingly, Widnes struggled in the early stages with Ormskirk scoring two tries before the visitors responded with a try from hard-working Chris Goodfellow and conversion by Geoff Owens.

Shortly afterwards, Widnes equalised with a try at the corner following a great break from Danny Carr.

In the second half, Ormskirk kicked a penalty and scored again before Justin Winstanley burst over for a try. n Despite mixed results in their first two matches, Widnes have done enough to qualify for the next stage of the Lancashire Centenary U12s Cup.

Despite horrendous weather conditions, Widnes got off to a good start against Liverpool Collegiate with a try scored by Sean Quinn.

Further tries from Aaron Duggan and Remy Julienne, and a conversion sent them into half time 17-0 up.

In the second half, Collegiate began strongly and prevented Widnes from scoring more tries.

The second game against rivals Warrington saw Widnes concede a try in the opening minutes.

More good work kept them on the back foot and, at half-time, Warrington led 28-0.

Widnes returned with much more determination, and despite injuries to Ben Mercer (neck) and Matty Thomas (ankle), they managed to check Warrington's march and were much the better side.

Unfortunately, despite a spirited effort, they were unable to cross the try line.
