WINNINGTON Park and Northwich have both signed former club favourites from a higher standard of rugby.

Prop Ian Davies returns to Burrows Hill from New Brighton along with Gary Bell, a full back and prolific points kicker, who has been at Macclesfield for three years.

Also switching from Macc, but to Northwich, is Steve Campbell, who left the Moss Farm club two years ago for a higher standard of rugby.

It is a major boost to Northwich who have fended off relegation in the South Lancs and Cheshire League for the past three seasons.

Northwich appointed Chris Chudleigh, from Sedgeley Park, as their new coach at the end of last season and further signings are possible.

Campbell, a centre, was a regular for Macc in National Three North but because of work could not make the commitment necessary to help the club into national level rugby.

Vice-chairman Phil Clarke said: 'Steve left with our blessing and we are delighted to have him back.

'Hopefully, he will kick-start something at Northwich. We have struggled for

three years, but want to compete for promotion, whether it is this season or next.

'We have a lot of young lads who have come through the junior ranks beginning to show what they can do and Steve's experience at a higher level will be invaluable.'

Northwich play Altrincham Kersal at home tomorrow (Thursday) in their first friendly before the new season which kicks off on September 3.

Weaverham-based Davies was in the Winnington team against Wasps 10 years ago and went on to play for Manchester, Sedgeley Park and New Brighton.

But Park have lost scrum half Mike Gallimore, seen as their replacement for coach Mark Warr, who has quit playing.

Gallimore, who came through the Winnington ranks and has also played for Northwich and amateur rugby leaguers Weaverham, has joined Chester.

Last season's top try scorer Ben Barton is Winnington's new captain.
