HELSBY moved into South Lancs-Cheshire Division Four's top three with an excellent victory in Liverpool.

The Villagers' defence soaked up early pressure before a Bob Merrill pass split the home defence for John Williams to storm his way over from 25 yards.

Andy Rowlinson converted but Mossley Hill came back into the game, two tries near the end of the first half giving them a 10-7 advantage at the break.

Helsby came out strongly and quickly regained the lead when Jon Stubbs collected a loose ball to score under the posts, Rowlinson again converting.

In a tight last 15 minutes, the Helsby pack contained the home attack.

Helsby secured the victory when good hands set Alex Rutter free and he had enough pace to score at the corner. Williams picked up the MoM award for his strong running and solid defence. Helsby 2nd 7 Birkenhead Park 3rd 32: A Helsby second string, which looked a little worse for wear in the wake of England's historic World Cup victory, lost their way against well-drilled Birkenhead.

The home team didn't really compete in the first 40 minutes and found themselves 20-0 down at half-time.

In fact, if it hadn't been for some heroic tackling from centre Gordon Lilley, the scoreline could have been greater.

A stern half-time team talk from player-coach Tony Ryder seemed to lift Helsby and a big improvement followed in the second half with the Villagers' pack starting to dominate.

And the Chester Road side were finally rewarded with a try. Scrum-half Dave Orme won a quick tap penalty and fed Gordon Lilley to go over from 20 yards. Tim Rutter converted. Bells Development MoM for Helsby was Gordon Lilley.
