PORT maintained their fine form with a hard-fought victory at Moore on Saturday.

On a difficult pitch Neil Percival's men overcame a three-point half-time deficit to take the two points and consolidate their position in the top five.

The captain was pleased with his side's second half display and said: 'It's never an easy place to go as it's a poor pitch that is outrageously small. So to win by a six-point margin was a great boost for the lads.

'The games we've played here over the years have always been tight affairs and I think it's the highest scoreline we have won by on this ground.

'We now have to try and put pressure on the third and fourth-placed sides and look to continue our good cup form in the Cheshire Plate quarter-final. Promotion may be beyond us but there's still lots to look forward to.'

Port began the match in dominant style and took the lead through Jerry Phillip's classy try.

But some sloppy play gave the home side the impetus midway through the first half and Port found themselves 8-5 down at the break.

In the second period Port upped the ante and Dave Layder fired a penalty between the posts to draw the sides level after more good work from the Port pack.

The visitors continued to push forward and their dominance saw Dave Layder add a further two penalties as the Port forwards denied the home side space and possession.

In the dying embers of the game Moore made a late surge to salvage something from the match, but Port contained them with some excellent defence to claim the points.

Port's next match will be the rearranged league fixture at home to Liverpool Collegiate, on Saturday at 2.30pm. The second team face Port Sunlight away and the thirds have a trip to Wirral.
