Moore 0, Newton-le-Willows 19: MOORE were unable to turn on the power for the big switch-on of their new lights.

The occasion was marred by a serious neck injury to Moore skipper George Young who has called time on his career after surgery.

Despite starting the stronger, the hosts were unable to complete any plays satisfactorily.

Newton responded forcefully in open play and capitalised on a poor tackling performance by Moore by breaking through the defensive line to score.

The second half continued in the same manner with Newton holding the upper hand.

In the 63rd minute, a collapsed scrum left the Moore captain Young with a neck injury which caused the proceedings to be abandoned.

The final score was agreed as 0-19.

Moore club spokesman James Richards said on Tuesday: 'I visited George last night and after several inconclusive xrays and a subsequent CT scan, it appears he has dislocated two vertebrae in his cervical spine.

'He is being operated on today to relocate the vertebrae and have a plate fitted to prevent a re-occurrence.

'Most importantly, he appears to have suffered very little in the way of neurological damage and only has a little numbness and tingling in his left finger and thumb.

'Fingers crossed, he'll make a full recovery.

Despite everything, he's maintaining his sense of humour, but has vowed 100% that this will be the end of his playing career.'
