HOYLAKE have a big date at Melrose Avenue this Saturday as they bid to take another step towards Twickenham in the Powergen Vase competition, writes Andrew Stratton.

Didsbury Toc H, who won at Wallasey in the last round, stand in their way and it promises to be a close game.

Didsbury beat Hoylake in the semifinals in a Tens competition at Hoylake at the start of the season and have since done well enough in North Lancashire One League.

Wirral were kicking themselves on Saturday as they fell to a single point defeat at Southport in South Lancashire/ Cheshire One League. They were the better side and scored three tries to two but it finished 17-18. Ryan Stead, Alistair Childs and Graham Phelan touched down for Wirral. Jim Yarranton landed one conversion but missed another which could have brought victory.

Anselmians found promotion-chasing Widnes too good but fought bravely in a 12-20 defeat. James Shallcross and Scott Tunna crossed and Chris Wells converted once.

Ellesmere Port failed 8-23 at Dukinfield in Division Two but Oldershaw claimed a 17-10 win over Orrell Anvils. Steve Wilson went in and Willy Gardner struck four penalties.

Prenton lost the Division Three cross river derby against Collegiate 8-22 and Wallasey were on the wrong side of a 20-29 scoreline at Newton Le Willows. Colin McLean crossed twice for Wallasey. There was also a try for Greg Hughes whilst Dave Hall landed a conversion and a penalty.

Parkonians enjoyed a 44-10 success over Holmes Chapel in Division Four with Paul Topping grabbing a try hat-trick. Paul Wigfield crossed twice and Matt Dawson and Alan Williams once each. Mark Hillan was on target with three conversions and one penalty.

Port Sunlight accounted for Linley and Kidsgrove 18-15. Dan Taylor and Simon Byrne went over and Duncan Clarke hit a conversion and two penalties. Many clubs have this Saturday off but Wallasey will play a re-arranged league game at home to Trentham.
