HOYLAKE welcomed Egremont from Cumbria in the fourth round of the Powergen Junior Vase on Saturday.

The visitors arrived early in determined mood but any ideas of an upset were soon dispelled.

Straight from the kick-off, the home side demonstrated their power up front as they dominated the scrums. Despite some resolute defensive work, it was not long before the visitors conceded the first try.

A scrum on the halfway line saw Rob Kurton break from the base of the scrum. He dummied the winger and pass to Kev Jones who registered the score.

Eventually, Dan Miller crashed over the line from close range to extend the lead to 10-0.

Soon after, Wylie found Fielding in a well-rehearsed line-out. The forwards drove the ball on from 15 metres out. Martin Williams broke from the base and the prolific flanker crashed over from five yards.

Robinson registered what was to be his only successful conversion of the match to give Hoylake a 17-0 lead.

Kev Jones notched the final score of the half following slick handling by the backs.

Turning around 22 points to the good, Hoylake felt confident that they had the beating of their opponents whose only real threat came when they managed to control enough possession to release their flying wingers.

Only seconds after the restart, an Egremont line-out deep in Hoylake territory was stolen, eventually allowing Ben Flint to race in from 40 yards.

Robinson then kept his composure to collect the ball from the ground and side-step his way past the last defender to score a great try.

At 32-0, the home side was cruising. After another catch and drive from the line-out, a ruck was well won deep in the Egremont 22.

Hoylake failed to capitalise as the ball was knocked on by a despairing Cumbrian hand. The home side's forwards rumbled their way to the line in the ensuing scrum though, before Kurton picked up at the base to plunge over the line from a metre out.

Dan Gleeson was the next to benefit from the good work of the forwards. Robinson floated out a great ball to Kurton who passed around his man to release Gleeson who had enough pace to touch down in the corner.

The final score of the match went to centre Nick McCormack who has recently joined from Waterloo. Right on cue, a strike was taken against the head some 20 metres out.

A number eight pick up resulted in Robinson taking the ball and releasing his backs. Simple but effective hands resulted in Flint being given enough space to register what would have been his second of the match.

However, he stepped inside and popped a tremendous pass to McCormack who was rewarded for his diligent support play.

The final score was 47-5 in a spirited game.

Next week Hoylake travel to Dukinfield, hoping to maintain their winning form while consolidating their lead at the top of South Lancs/Cheshire 2.
