Helsby 22 Congleton 10
HELSBY were fired up for Saturday’s basement clash and they turned in a well-rounded team display to pocket the points.
They opened the scoring with a try from arguably the team’s best move of the season.
The pack took the ball on, driving up the pitch before switching out to the backs who passed cleanly down the line. When stopped, the forwards were on the scene, supporting quickly to maintain quick possession and take play forward. After a couple of phases, John Williams made an incisive break and was able to offload in the tackle to Andy Dean who finished off a well crafted team try.
Helsby continued to dominate the first half against a well drilled Congleton side and went on to score a second try through Phil Arkell.
The hosts went into half-time 12-0 up and the score quickly became 17-0 when Andy Rowlinson crossed the whitewash early in the second period.
Slack play by Helsby allowed Congleton to hit back with two tries, but the home side – led by man of the match Bruce Rigby – eased their nerves late on with a try from Rowlinson.
Helsby visit table topping Knutsford tomorrow (2.30pm).
