CALDY RFC was proud to witness the presentation of the Rugby Football Union's Volunteer award to Roger Flashman.

At a time when big presentations have been made for the achievements of the England Rugby team it is fitting that the efforts of grass roots workers are also recognised in this way.

Former Cheshire President Frank Povall was on hand to 'do the honours' for an award that has been rarely made within Cheshire County.

No-one could deny the dedication of the diminutive Caldy secretary who is well known in local rugby circles. Roger's involvement in Caldy RFC dates back to the early 1960's when his rugby career started and he played over 500 games for the club.

In almost 40 years of involvement at Caldy he has held the posts of chairman of the entertainments committee, second team captain, chairman of development committee, team secretary, match secretary, assistant fixture secretary, fixture secretary, chairman of selectors, club chairman, club secretary, 7's committee and youth accreditation officer.

Throughout the years he has been a committee member or club official for all but two of them. His acerbic wit is most especially reserved for opposing teams when carrying out the weekly draw and man of the match presentation.

His superstitions mean that he would not feel comfortable at any Caldy 1st XV game without his collection of talismen which includes the wearing of his lucky underpants.

Club spokesman Colin Free said: "Characters like Roger are the heartbeat of many voluntary organisations. With his love of the game and Caldy Rugby Club we hope his efforts will continue for many years to come."

Meanwhile, Caldy 1st team took a break from competitive rugby with many of them at the club to watch Caldy Lions (2nd XV) demolish Rhyl second team 66-0.

The Lions looked too strong in every area and there were hat-tricks for John Close, Brendan McGaffney and Paul McDonald with McGaffney converting all but one conversions from every imaginable angle.

Caldy 1st team entertain Rochdale at Paton Filed this coming Saturday. Four weeks ago Caldy ran out winners in a closely fought game with a score (15-27) that somewhat flattered on the day.

After last week's hiccup against Altrincham Kersal, Caldy will be keen to get back to normal service. Kick-Off for the last competitive game in 2003 is at 2.30pm.
