PORT continued their perfect home form with a hard-fought victory against Mossley Hill on Saturday.

Captain Neil Percival was delighted with the win and said: 'We were always in control even though conditions favoured them.

'It was such a strong wind and it affected the game, but we fought hard and we've now won both home matches and are through to the next round of the national cup. It's a decent start and now we have to build on it.'

Port initially struggled to make an impact in the game, conceding an early penalty as the visitors enjoyed considerable territorial advantage.

But the match quickly swung in the hosts' favour when Dave Layder kicked a penalty to equalise and then scrum-half Mike Wilcock touched down after being expertly put in by Phil Gow. Dave Layder added the conversion.

Although Port finally appeared to be in control of the contest the visitors refused to give in and hit back with a try on the stroke of half time.

In the second half the home side made no such mistakes and cruised to victory thanks to prop Steve Riley barging over for a try with Dave Layder once again converting.

Mossley Hill offered little in return and the game was put beyond doubt when Dave Layder kicked a late penalty as the visitors found themselves penned in their own half during the latter stages.

Gary Morris won the Andrew Slawson & Partners man-of-the-match. nThis weekend the Port are away to Old Salians (ko 3pm). The second and third teams are at home to Anselmians (3pm).
