PORT secured their first win of the season on Saturday to haul themselves off the bottom of the table with their vanquished opponents taking their place in last spot.

Captain Neil Percival said: 'Hopefully the win will kick-start our season. We've got three crucial games before Christmas against Dukinfield, Manchester Wanderers and Birchfield again and if we get some more victories, we can really climb the table. We found ourselves behind on Saturday after not doing anything wrong but showed plenty of bottle to fight back.'

Two early Dave Layder penalties gave Port six points to show for their early forward domination.

The visitors replied first with a penalty and then a harsh converted penalty try conceded by Paul Millington who was subsequently sinbinned for 10 minutes.

Once again Port found themselves up against it 13-6 down and down to 14 men, but showing a new-found spirit they launched themselves into Birch-field in the second half.

Kev Richardson marched under the posts and Layder converted before Anthony McCarthy went over in the corner for the winner with Layder again converting to complete a deserved victory.
