STAND-OFF Ian Bebbington crowned his first appearance of the season with a tremendous 33-point haul as in-form Birchfield pulverised their seaside opposition.

Southport showed little resistance and the first half saw a brace of tries from centre John MacMullan.

Paul Findlater and Richard Dennett added to the try count with Ian Bebbington tagging on the extras for a 36-0 interval lead.

The second half saw Bebbington come into his own with a hat-trick of tries.

A late burst from Southport saw Alan Preece go over for an unconverted try.

Deserving praise for Birchfield were Richard Thomasson, returning after a two-year absence, and young prop Rob Murphy for an outstanding debut dis-play.

This Saturday sees Birchfield at home to Garstang 3pm kick off. nLet there be light! That will be the message at The Gentlemen of Moore RUFC tonight.

New floodlights are being officially unveiled at the village club as a Moore Veterans XV take on their counterparts from Warrington. Kick off is at 7.30pm.

Club secretary Robin Cheek said: 'The new lights were primarily funded under the RFU Community Club Development programme and are a major investment.

'This is a significant milestone in the development of our club and we are very keen that people, particularly potential players, get to know about it so that we may attract more people into rugby.'

Representatives of the RFU, Cheshire RFU, Halton Borough Council and the lights contractors will be present for the switch on at about 7.15pm.
