FORWARDS coach Aled Davies put a philosophical spin on Chester's 12-5 home defeat by Huddersfield in North One on Saturday.

Davies said the inconsistent Hare Lane outfit were a 'strange' side after their low-scoring loss to the mid-table Yorkshiremen.

He added: 'We can beat anyone on our day but it seems that it just depends what mood the team is in. If we can find the right buttons to press, this side can be world beaters.'

Chester, who entertain third-placed Altrincham Kersal tomorrow, were outfoxed by Huddersfield's spoiling tactics on Saturday.

The visitors disabled the powerful Chester scrum by collapsing it time and time again without punishment.

Huddersfield broke the deadlock on 31 minutes, scoring a simple converted try to go into the half-time break 7-0 up.

An interval rollicking from Davies and director of rugby Steve Dorrington had little effect as Chester started the second half by conceding another try after some poor tackling.

Chester's response was to make a number of changes, with Mike Gallimore replacing Steve Johnson and making an immediate impact, terrorising the Huddersfield defence at every opportunity.

Aled Davies replaced injured hooker Nathan Sandland-Jones and Martin Clark came on for Phil Cottle.

The spirited Gallimore swapped roles with livewire scrum-half Russ Meadows and made an immediate impact by going over for an unconverted try to give Chester hope with eight minutes remaining.

Chester battled to the end but could not add any further points to their score.

The Walker Smith Way man-of-the-match award went to Jim Lyle who tried hard all afternoon.
